Spa Week Deal: $50 Microdermabrasion at Skin Spa New York

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that exfoliates and removes the outer layer of dry, dead skill cells. This treatment is especially effective for controlling hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone) and diminishing acne scars and dark spots.

Skin Spa New York Flatiron/Chelsea./Spa Week
When I can afford it, I treat myself to microdermabrasion every couple months. So thanks to the nice folks at Spa Week Media, I got the chance to preview the $50 Spa Week deal for micro at Skin Spa New York's Flatiron/Chelsea location.

During Spa Week, Skin Spa -- which has several locations in New York City including Soho and Midtown -- offers a $50 power peel, customized facial, Brazilian wax or a 50-minute Swedish, deep tissue or aromatherapy massage.

This was my first visit to Skin Spa New York and I was pleasantly surprised by the minimalist, modern decor. And my aesthetician, Marina, was warm and friendly.  She agreed that micro was a good treatment for my skin type.  First she removed my makeup and made sure my skin was dry before using the crystal micro machine. It felt a bit too rough at first, so she adjusted the strength.  I made a joke about how Samantha looked after she got a laser resurfacing peel on a classic episode of Sex and the City. Marina laughed and assured me that micro is far more gentle than a laser facial, which she would not recommend for my skin type.

After about 10 minutes of exfoliation, Marina soothed my skin with a calming mask, which she left on for a few minutes. She then removed the mask, cleansed and applied a light sunscreen -- a must no matter the season because micro makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

I left Skin Spa New York with glowing, rejuvenated skin. Marina recommended that I also try a glycolic acid peel and to get a series of 3-6 micro/peel treatments in order to see more improvement in my skin tone.  I may come back for another treatment in a month. But you shouldn't wait. Spa Week is April 17-23, so book your $50 treatments now at one of the participating Skin Spa New York locations.

Conway Discount Clothing Chain Closing in New York City

(Tracy E. Hopkins) It's the end of a budget shopping era. Conway discount stores are closing in New York City . As of this weekend, a sign on the sole Herald Square location (34th Street btwn 7th and 8th Ave) says the store will close in "7 Days." Before I relocated to the Big Apple, I was introduced to the discount chain while on a bus trip from Baltimore.  I recall the first time I saw Conway's signature pink bags carried by hurried shoppers in midtown. And Miss Foster, the trip organizer and a bargain hunter from way back, took me to the store for the first time. Conway store in the Fulton Mall./Tracy E. Hopkins When I moved here in 1994, my love affair with Conway continued.  I furnished my first apartment with discount knick-knacks and home goods from the store.  And much to my chagrin, in hindsight, I curated most of my wardrobe for my first full-time job from the long-shuttered 42nd Street and Third Avenue store. One regretful ensemble: Lime green and...

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...
